Just get some decent sleep! According to the UK’s University of Warwick, the mental and physical improvements of better sleep are similar to what lottery winners felt after landing a quarter-of-a-million-dollar jackpot!

The study on over 30‑thousand people lasted 4-years. And those who made positive changes to their sleep habits were significantly happier and healthier than those who relied on sleeping pills.

If you’d like to turn your mood around, experts say you should not only hang out with a friend who always seems happy. Go exercise with them, too! So, go for a hike, or take a yoga class and put your mat next to theirs. Because when we can smell the sweat of positive people, their chemicals influence us and activate positive feel-good brain chemicals in us. In fact, in a study at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, people exposed to the sweat of happy people smiled more themselves… and those who were exposed to the sweat of negative people frowned more.

…just TRY! A study in the Journal of Positive Psychology found people who TRY to cheer up report a greater happiness boost than those who wait for something to come along to change their mood. Psychology professor Yuna Ferguson says, when we have the intention to feel happier, we’re more likely to notice and

appreciate the good things around us.

Need a boost of happiness? Listen to music you love but haven’t heard in forever. According to the journal Science, forgotten musical favorites provide the biggest mood boost. That’s because they combine nostalgia AND novelty, which activates the brain’s reward centers better than either one alone.

Become fully engaged with something you’re passionate about. That’s according to psychotherapist and creativity coach Dr. Eric Maisel. He says putting your heart and soul into a project – which he calls, quote, “productive obsessing” – can make the time fly, and bring meaning and fulfillment to your life. Without that passion, you’ll tend to get bored, listless, give up on your goals, and even get depressed. Bottom line: If you want to be successful and happy, find a goal you can become passionately obsessed about.

It’ll make you BOTH happier. That’s according to a new study from the University of Toronto. The researchers found couples that spend time hugging, holding hands, and touching each other lovingly are MUCH happier in their relationships and in life. The reason? Because physical contact triggers production of feel-good chemicals, especially the bonding hormone oxytocin, which makes couples feel closer, and has been shown in numerous studies to boost happiness.

That’s according to a new study from Princeton University. But if you’re one of the 15% who usually feels down, stick a few baby pictures in your wallet or keep them on your phone. Don’t have kids? Photos of other people’s babies and even baby animals can do the trick. The reason? A study at the University of Wisconsin-Madison found looking at baby pictures activates a part of the brain associated with positive emotions, which can boost your mood almost instantly.

So you want to lose weight, drink less, exercise more, and de-clutter your house. What should you tackle first? ALL of it! That’s according to a study at UC Santa Barbara.

When researchers had study participants commit to eating better, exercising more, cutting back on alcohol, getting more sleep, and practicing mindfulness all simultaneously – it worked! After 6 weeks, the study subjects showed improvement on all fronts. They were stronger, healthier, had higher self-esteem and were happier.

Brain science professor Michael Mrazek led the research and he says each lifestyle change supported the others. Exercising makes it easier to sleep… sleeping well makes it easier to eat well… and being mindful makes it easier to make good choices. So, if you have a lot of changes you’d like to make, go for it! Do them all at once.

The easiest way to improve your mood is to change the way you walk. When researchers studied the mindset of people walking, those who were hunched over and shuffling were in a funk. And the walkers who took purposeful strides, head up, shoulders back had a brighter attitude.
