Here’s what you’re feeling: Cardiologist Dr. Mehmet Oz says when we’re nervous, our body produces adrenaline, triggering a fight-or-flight reaction, where blood rushes to our extremities in case we need to outrun a mugger. So, butterflies are the blood rushing OUT of your digestive tract. You may also need a bathroom because the hormone cortisol triggers the colon to contract, which can trigger instant diarrhea. So before a stressful situation, make sure you know where the nearest bathroom is!

When you gotta go… you gotta go!

Were you too busy, or too far from a bathroom, and had to hold it for what seemed like forever? But once you were able to “go,” you couldn’t STOP running to the bathroom multiple times? Urologist Dr. Elizabeth Kevaler says that’s common. Because the longer you wait to pee, the harder the deep pelvic muscles clamp down on your bladder. And once you open the floodgates, so to speak, those stressed-out muscles repeatedly spasm – sending you down the hall again and again. Bottom line: You’ll run to the bathroom less if you go when you get the urge.

Time to get a little personal about bathroom behavior… and this is important.

So, here’s the scenario… You go to the restroom at work – and all the stalls are occupied but one. You turn around and head back to your desk because there’s no way you’re going number 2 in a crowded bathroom right?
So, is it a problem to “hold it”? Internist Dr. Keri Peterson says it’s not a great idea. If you feel the urge to go and ignore it, it can cause chronic constipation and that can lead to other more serious problems. Let’s just leave it at that. So what can you do if you’re, how should we say it… poop-shy?

Dr. Peterson recommends exercising in the morning. That usually will move things along in your intestine so you go to the bathroom before work. Also, make sure your dinner has plenty of fiber. It’ll not only help you sleep better – but you will likely wake up with the urge to go.

Forget about drinking 8 glasses of water a day. According to UCLA urologist Dr. Jesse Mills, a better measure for staying hydrated is having to pee 4 or 5 times a day. Since people of different body weights and exercise levels need different amounts of water, there isn’t a standard number of glasses you should drink. But you’ll know you’re adequately hydrated if nature calls between 4 and 5 times a day.

If you think storing your toothbrush in a cover will protect it from the germs spewing out of a flushed toilet, you’re right. But you’re setting yourself up for other problems. Because a toothbrush inside a cover will have a hard time drying out completely. And a damp environment means one thing: Germs! So leave your toothbrush out in the open to dry out every day. Microorganisms can grow on it still, but they’re unlikely to make you sick. And replace it every 3 months. By then, the bristles won’t be cleaning your teeth as thoroughly.

You don’t need to use wet wipes after using the bathroom!

Internist Dr. Holly Phillips says there’s no hygienic advantage for adults to clean themselves with baby wipes instead of toilet paper. Plus, some wipes contain aloe, vitamin E, and alcohol… Which can irritate your skin, and leave it stinging and inflamed. When dealing with anything that touches your private parts, choose unscented, un-medicated, and chemical-free.
And as far as flushing those wipes – don’t do it. They may SAY they’re flushable, but they’re a major reason sewers and pipes get clogged. If you still want to use wet wipes, keep a diaper pail in your bathroom and toss them there.

What do you need in the morning – to feel calm, or energized? The type of light bulbs in your bathroom can actually make a difference. A “soft white” bulb – or one that says “2,700 Ks” on it – has the right kind of light to start your day on a calmer note. If you need energy, a “bright white” bulb will do the trick.

Make some rosemary tea – but don’t drink it. Pour it in a hot bath and soak in it for 20 minutes. Dr. Alan Hirsch, director of the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation, says hot water relaxes muscles that are spasming. And the aromatic oils in rosemary boost production of the neurotransmitter serotonin – which relieves pain.

Sound good? Here’s the recipe: Steep half-a-cup of dried rosemary in boiling water for 10 minutes. Then strain it, add the tea to your bathwater, and climb in.

If kale gives you the runs, there’s a reason.

Actually two reasons. The first is the fiber. Kale has the insoluble kind, which means it doesn’t break down – it passes right through you. The other reason is a carbohydrate it contains called raffinose. Our bodies can’t break that down either during digestion. That’s according to the Johns Hopkins Digestive Center. Instead, the fiber and raffinose go straight to your colon where they ferment and send you running for the restroom. So lay off the kale if you won’t be near a bathroom for a while – or you’re on a date.

Have you heard of “latchkey incontinence”?

Have you noticed that when you have to go to the bathroom – really badly – the closer you get to the bathroom, the harder it is to hold it? It’s an actual “thing” – called latchkey incontinence! Psychotherapist Dr. Ginnie Love says, when we see an object that relates to an action, it triggers the brain to need to perform that action even more urgently. It’s all subconscious – but since we associate a bathroom door with actually “going” it makes it that much harder to hold it than when we’re driving, for example, and we KNOW we can’t go. If for some reason you really have to go but the bathroom is occupied – any kind of distraction can help you decrease the urge of latchkey incontinence, so you can hold it a little longer.
