So you’ve got a cold or the flu…

Here’s what to eat/drink to feel better, according to clinical dietitians at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

First: Ginger: If you’re feeling nauseous, ginger has been shown to provide relief. Try ginger tea, or add it to soup or a stir-fry.

Another food to eat when you’re sick: Garlic. It has healing antiviral and antibacterial properties.

Finally, feel better by eating bananas. They’re easy to digest on an upset stomach and provide potassium, an essential electrolyte that helps maintain the right balance of water for optimal cell function.

Yes, as long as it doesn’t make you feel light-headed or nauseous. Sports nutritionist Brittany R. Allman says when we exercise on an empty stomach, our body burns stored carbs and fat, which can speed up weight loss. And exercising on a full stomach can speed digestion by helping move food from the stomach to the intestines. Still, we’re better off eating a maximum of 200 calories about an hour before a workout, that’s a combination of carbs for quick energy, and protein to help prevent muscle breakdown. Like a banana, and a couple tablespoons of peanut butter.

…according to biochemists at John Moores University: Try eating unripe bananas. They contain resistant starch – which is crucial for weight loss. Because even though resistant starch is a carb, it’s chemical make-up doesn’t cause our blood sugar to rise. Resistant starch also helps release a hormone that increases fat burning. And scientists say the less-ripe a banana is, the more resistant starch it contains. So aim to eat 20 grams of resistant starch a day – or 2 unripe bananas.

A slightly under-ripe, green banana. They’re loaded with resistant starch, a type of carbohydrate that passes through the small intestine without being digested. That encourages the population of healthy gut bacteria, and makes us feel full for an extended period of time. It also makes us more efficient at burning fat.

Avocado can relieve stress. It’s down to the monounsaturated fats in avocado, which can help lower blood pressure. Avocado also has more potassium per serving than a banana, which relaxes muscles and reduces blood pressure, too.

Here are two ways:

• In England, the go-to for an upset stomach is peppermint tea. It relieves cramps and constipation by relaxing the muscles from the esophagus on down. Just don’t use it if you have heartburn. Because that relaxing effect can allow acid to splash back up.

• And in Indonesia, they reach for nutmeg. Try sprinkling half a teaspoon on mashed banana, or mixing it in yogurt. Nutmeg is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory – and calms stomachaches, spasms and diarrhea.

Eat more fiber!

For every 10 grams of fiber you add to your diet, you cut your risk of coronary death by 17%. That’s according to a report in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Aim for 25 grams a day…that’s what you’d get from half a cup of lentils, 1 cup of raspberries, a banana, and half an avocado.

It could be something you ate yesterday that kept you awake last night. Because, aside from stress, our diet is the number one cause of a restless night. So let’s run down the best and worst foods for sleep. We’ll start with the WORST.

It turns out, those high-protein diets we love for weight loss can sabotage our sleep. Dr. Michael Breus wrote The Sleep Doctor’s Diet Plan. And he says that high-protein, low carb diets provide a steady supply of energy, which is great in the daytime. But at night, it can suppress the hormones that help us relax. And our wide-awake digestive system can keep us from getting deep, restorative sleep.

Another enemy of sleep is Fatty, fried foods. The fattier your dinner is, the less sleep you’ll get. Dr. Breus says, eating foods high in fat can trigger heartburn or stomach issues when you lie down.

So what are the BEST foods for sleep? Dr. Breus says try eating breakfast for dinner.

The healthy carbs in a bowl of whole-grain cereal, for example, will stimulate production of the sleep hormone melatonin.

And if you top your cereal with a banana, you’ll get a dose of magnesium, which is a natural muscle-relaxant.

Finally, wash down your “breakfast-food dinner” with some cherry juice. It contains so much melatonin that drinking 2 cups a day can add 40 minutes to the average amount of time you sleep each night.

Here’s a better way to recover from a workout than having a sugary drink.

If you want to avoid sugary, artificial sports drinks and still get the nutrients you need after a workout – eat a banana instead. Researchers say it’s the one food item that can replicate the benefits of a sports drink. With its mix of electrolytes and minerals, a banana has everything our bodies need to recover from a workout – without all the artificial additives.
