First of all, research shows 95% of women admit they’ve withheld information from loved ones AND lied to someone close to them. But even the lies we consider harmless – like, ‘Yes, I love your meatloaf!’ – can cause anxiety and body aches… especially if you feel guilty about lying. Dr. Deirdre Fitzgerald is a professor of behavior analysis at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. And she says, even lies to save face – or save someone else from embarrassment – can weaken the immune system, causing headaches, back pain, and yes, diarrhea.

85% of North Americans will have back pain at some point, and here’s a surprising cause: Not getting enough vitamin D! Dr. Stewart Leavitt is a pain management specialist. And he says patients with chronic back pain often have lower levels of vitamin D. So, ask your doctor about taking 2,000 International Units of “D” per day. Dr. Leavitt found people who do that see their pain either disappear or become significantly reduced.

85% of North Americans will have back pain at some point. And here’s a surprising cause you may not be aware of: You’re not “regular,” in the bathroom sense. Blockage in the lower intestine can cause pressure in the lower back. And the longer you’re blocked, the worse the pain gets. The fix? Eat more fiber from vegetables, fruit, and whole grains – and exercise to prevent constipation.

The #1 way to reduce lower back pain is exercises that strengthen your core and keep your back in balance, like planks, bridges, and pelvic tilts. That’s according to a review of 21 clinical trials involving more than 30,000 people. And doing core-strengthening exercises, aerobics, and hamstring stretches before your first-ever twinge of back pain makes you 35% less likely to develop back pain at all.

It works even better than physical therapy! The American Academy of Pain Management had over 300 study subjects either do yoga or physical therapy once a week, for 3 months. Afterward, those doing yoga had 23% less pain! That’s because yoga strengthens the back and core muscles, plus the deep breathing and meditative quality of yoga makes the brain less sensitive to pain.

If a friend ever asks you to crack their back for them, don’t do it! Physical therapy professor Dr. Greg Kawchuk says unless you’re a chiropractor, you risk using too much force, which could damage ligaments or disks. But if you crack your OWN back by twisting your torso to get a satisfying “crack,” that’s OK! Dr. Kawchuk says people usually do it because of stiffness or pressure, and it does provide relief by moving joint surfaces away from each other. And just like cracking your knuckles, even regularly twisting your torso typically won’t cause lasting problems, including arthritis or lingering pain.

Before you pop a pill, try a massage, or low-impact exercise, like walking. Because boosting the flow of oxygen-rich blood can reduce inflammation, which helps cut pain. Those are new guidelines from the American College of Physicians. If your back is really hurting, start out slowly – walking for about 10 minutes once a day, for example. And gradually increase the time and distance until you’re getting at least 30 minutes of exercise on most days.

Guys, it’s time for you to stop sitting on your wallet in your back pocket. Dr. Stuart McGill is a professor of spine biomechanics at the University of Waterloo. And he says, a thick wallet can put tremendous stress on your hip joint and lower back, which can lead to chronic back pain.

It can also tilt your pelvis and misalign your spine. Dr. McGill says, either remove your wallet from your pants entirely when you’re sitting or driving… or switch to a thinner money clip… or go digital and use something like Apple Pay or Google Wallet.

What does the Journal Of The American Medical Association say is the best way to beat lower back pain? Get up and get moving! Their studies found that’s the single most effective way to relieve lower back pain – and keep it from coming back. So what kind of activity works best? The experts say pretty much anything works – from strength training, to yoga, to walking. It works because the activity promotes blood flow, reducing inflammation. And anything that strengthens your core will take the pressure off your spine and prevent back spasms.
