Stop raking leaves! That’s because mold grows on fallen leaves, and stirring them up can release spores into the air you’re breathing – which can trigger an asthma attack. If you absolutely have to rake: Wear a surgical mask while you’re doing yard work.

If you want to live at least two years longer – or more – eat plenty of fish! That’s the gist of research from the Harvard School of Public Health… which found the Omega-3 fatty acids in fish lower our risk for heart disease, depression, asthma, Alzheimer’s and more. The types of fish with the most Omega-3s include salmon, albacore tuna, lake trout, herring, and mackerel. And the researchers recommend eating at least two servings a week.

Well, anything that gets used a lot should be replaced about every 18 months. That’s because the fabric and foam core gradually pick up dead skin, dust mites, sweat, and even fungus – which can trigger breathing problems, from allergies to asthma. So, if your throw pillows seem a bit flat, or they don’t spring back when you fold them in half – toss them and go shopping.

Because you’re more likely to have an asthma attack after a thunderstorm. That’s according to researchers from the University of Georgia. They say the electrical currents caused by rain and lightning break up pollen into extra-tiny particles. And the smaller they are, the farther they’ll travel on the wind, and the more likely you’ll be exposed to them. So if you have asthma and a storm is coming – stay indoors, even for a few hours afterward.

If you’d like to seriously improve your health, sit as far from your computer printer as possible. A report in the journal Environmental Science and Technology found one-third of laser printers studied emit ultrafine particles of toner dust……And when inhaled, those particles end up deep in the lungs, and increase our risk for asthma, respiratory problems, and diseases, like emphysema.

Before you dig into that Thanksgiving spread, take time to think about what’s in front of you.

Here’s an eating guide:

First: The bird. If you’re preparing the turkey, don’t buy the “self-basting” kind, which is injected with a solution that’s supposed to help “improve” the flavor and juiciness of the meat. Those turkeys have nearly twice the fat and salt as the old-fashioned kind.

Next: Cranberry sauce. Cranberries are high in vitamin C and tannins, the heart-healthy compounds also found in red wine.

Finally: Sweet potatoes. One potato has nearly zero fat and only 120 calories – not bad at all. Sweet potatoes also contain an antioxidant that fights cancer, and reduces the risk of asthma and rheumatoid arthritis. Just don’t top yours with a million mini-marshmallows!

Finally, watch out for gravy, which is basically salty, flavored fat.

Before you spray more room freshener, know this: Keeping things smelling fresh and clean may be one of the biggest causes of asthma. The American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine is out with “one of the world’s largest studies of lung disease.” Some scientists believe that breathing problems might be linked closely with air fresheners and cleaning sprays. The study notes that asthma rates have been rising fast since the 1970’s, while sales of air freshener and cleaning spray have also gone up by more than 60%.

So instead of masking odors with chemicals – clean the air by getting some plants. A spider plant – or a snake plant – can filter out bad smells and airborne chemicals. Or make your own room freshener by soaking orange peels in water and spritzing the room.

exercise-asthma

If you have exercise-induced asthma – where you cough, wheeze or have shortness of breath only while exercising – pop a vitamin C beforehand next time. 20% of people who DON’T have regular asthma have trouble breathing during exercise – especially in cold or dry air. If that’s you, taking a-thousand milligrams of vitamin C an hour before spin class will help keep your airways open. That’s because vitamin C relaxes blood vessels and lowers stress hormones – both of which can help airways stay open.

Why do some dogs make your eyes water from allergies, while others have no effect?

dog-allergy

It’s not because some dogs are hypo-allergenic. In fact, all the breeds thought to be safer picks, like Labradoodles, Airedales and Waterdogs – actually have HIGHER levels of the proteins that cause allergies than other dogs! That’s according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology.
So what does make a difference? Well, the things that cause allergic reactions vary from dog to dog. Meaning, the compounds in saliva, dander and urine can be different from one Labradoodle to another. That means you may be fine with one dog and a sneezing mess with another. However, you can get shots from an allergist to help you live with any pet you choose.
