Plant some cinnamon or chocolate-scented geraniums! They bloom like crazy in the fall and winter, and just pinching a leaf releases the powerful feel-good aroma of cinnamon or chocolate. Research at Wheeling Jesuit University found the scent of cinnamon instantly boosts alertness. And other research shows the smell of chocolate stimulates the happiness center of our brain.

Geraniums grow the best on a super-sunny windowsill. But they’ll do just fine if you shine a desk lamp with a fluorescent bulb on them for at least 4 hours a day.

If you find it hard to relax on your day off because you can’t stop worrying about the little things, try this: Rub on a little coconut-scented lotion, or light a coconut candle. Research at Columbia University found the aroma of coconut helps blood pressure return to normal after a stressful task. It also reduces the levels of the stress hormone cortisol by 24%. The reason? Because the smell of coconut stimulates the area of the brain that regulates mood.

Did you know that in general, the stronger a food’s aroma, the less of it we’ll eat? And experts say that’s true whether the food’s sweet, spicy or savory. That’s because, when food has a strong odor, we think it has more calories – so we tend to eat more moderately. That’s why adding a dash of strong spices to hot food can help you lose weight.

Olfactory scientist Dr. Pamela Dalton says deliberately breathing in a food’s aroma helps us appreciate its flavor more. And when we think food is more flavorful, we need less of it to feel full. So take a deep whiff of your food before eating. And when you’re cooking, use things like fennel, garlic and onions – to increase your food’s aroma. You can also try doing a few jumping jacks before eating. The activity will increase blood flow to your nasal passages – improving your sense of smell and enhancing the effect of the food’s aroma even more.

Scratch-and-sniff the rind. The aroma of citrus fruits can change our brain chemistry by calming the sympathetic nervous system, which deactivates our stress response.

If you’re feeling anxious, brew some vanilla tea. Stanford University researchers say the chemical compounds in vanilla tea boost our brain’s production of relaxing alpha waves… And even if you just inhale the aroma, it relieves stress and irritability in 90% of people – in less than 3 minutes.

Did you know that your personal aroma – meaning your body odor – is as distinct as a fingerprint? According to organic chemist Dr. George Preti, every person on the planet smells distinctly different from everybody else. Even identical twins. And that’s why dogs – and soon computers – will be able to detect and diagnose health issues simply by our smell.
