Stick a bottle of mouthwash in your desk drawer, break room cubby, or on the counter!

According to the journal Appetite, when study subjects ate a bite or two of a favorite snack – then rinsed with mouthwash – they were less likely to go back for more. That’s because the mouthwash sweeps away the savory, salty, sweet, or fatty flavors lingering in your mouth, and the minty taste switches off your appetite.

Even just sniffing something minty can do the trick. A study found that people who sniffed the scent of peppermint every 2 hours weren’t as hungry as those who didn’t sniff mint, and consumed 400 fewer calories each day! The scent distracts the brain from thinking about food and even dials down hunger hormones.

Staying up later tonight. Even an HOUR later! According to Northwestern University researchers, shortchanging our sleep interferes with appetite-regulating hormones, making us crave fatty, high-calorie foods, and throwing off our metabolism. So, before you watch “just one more” episode of the series you’ve been bingeing – remember it could cause a fast food binge the next day.

Try rubbing your ears! Researchers at West Chester University in Pennsylvania found that stimulating the nerves in and around the ears triggers production of appetite-killing endorphins. So, every time you feel a craving coming on, firmly massage your earlobes, ear cartilage, and the surrounding skin for 60 seconds. The researchers say doing that at least 3 times a day can help you lose up to 6 pounds in a month.

Research in Psychological Science found that as our stress levels rise, our body produces more of the appetite-regulating hormone ghrelin, which boosts hunger. And lots of studies have shown when we’re stressed out, we’re more likely to reach for high-fat, high-sugar treats, than something healthy…… which significantly raises our risk for weight gain and depression. And while we can’t change how our body reacts to stress, we can change the foods we keep on hand. So, stock up on more vegetables and Greek yogurt, instead of chips and ice cream! That way, you’re less likely to blow your diet after your next argument.

It’ll kill your appetite. Studies show that when we exercise in temperatures 97 degrees or hotter, we eat about 200 fewer calories at our next meal. That’s compared to working out in an air-conditioned room. It works by elevating levels of a hormone peptide called YY, which dampens appetite.

If you want to stay slim, commit these two numbers to memory: 10,000 and 5. According to the journal Appetite, the only two weight-loss-maintenance methods that consistently work are taking 10,000 steps a day – and eating 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Doing those 2 things helped women maintain their weight loss for 2 years. So if you’ve reached your goal weight, remember 10,000 steps a day and 5 servings of fruits and vegetables to keep the pounds off.

We’re missing some of the benefits of lemon water, because we haven’t been making it the right way! That’s according to our friend, registered dietician Keri Glassman. She says, it’s not just about squeezing a couple lemon slices into hot or cold water… We need to grate in a half-teaspoon of lemon zest. The lemon rind has a lot more flavonoids – so we’re missing out if we don’t include it. So what can lemon water do for us? Keri Glassman says a glass or mug before breakfast not only helps us stay hydrated… It can also improve digestion and regulate our appetite. And nutritionist Dana James says the bitterness of the lemon activates our bile flow, which helps remove fat-soluble toxins from our system. So have lemon water first thing in the morning, but include some lemon zest.

The most effective way to fight food cravings is: Go for a walk. Taking a brisk, 15‑minute walk can curb even the strongest cravings. That’s according to the journal Appetite. That’s because walking can distract the mind. It also reduces stress and boredom – which are two big triggers for cravings.

In fact, experts say that allowing yourself to enjoy a little of your favorite foods – even if they’re fattening – can actually help you lose weight! According to a study in the journal Appetite – it’s all about perception. In other words, the way we feel when we indulge has a major impact on our ability to stick with our diet.

The researchers found that people who thought of the occasional treat as a “celebration” – and enjoyed it without beating themselves up – were more likely to stick to a healthy eating plan. While people who felt guilty afterward saw their indulgence as a sign of failure and loss of control… Making them much more likely to throw in the towel, and resume their old, unhealthy eating habits.
