If you’re looking for a happiness boost: Eat blueberries. According to the journal Pharmacological Research, eating a half-cup of blueberries every day could raise your serotonin levels by 20%. Serotonin is a brain chemical linked to a better mood. It also helps keep your brain cells and arteries running smoothly – decreasing the risk of stroke, heart disease and Alzheimer’s. And we get the serotonin boost from the anthocyanin in blueberries; the antioxidant that gives them their deep color.

Here’s another reason to roll out your yoga mat: It could keep you from catching a cold or the flu! Sports medicine physician Dr. Jordan Metzl says the slow controlled movements in yoga trigger an anti-inflammatory response in the body. And in a study, people who practiced yoga 4 times a week for 3 months improved their immune function and increased their antioxidant levels.

Drink green tea every day.
In a recent 12-week study, people who drank 4 cups of green tea daily, and did a 25-minute workout, lost an average of two more pounds and more belly fat than those who exercised but DIDN’T drink green tea. The difference? It’s the catechins in green tea, which are a type of antioxidant that triggers the release of fat from fat cells, and helps speed up the liver’s ability to turn fat into energy.

But chamomile has major health benefits. According to a 30-year study in the European Journal of Public Health, people who drank chamomile tea just twice a week were up to 74% less likely to develop thyroid issues…Including over- or under-active thyroid, goiters and even cancer! The chamomile magic comes from antioxidants that fight oxidative-stress and inflammation that can damage your thyroid. So brew some calming chamomile twice a week.

Order Italian! Get some minestrone soup and an order of garlic bread – with extra garlic. That meal can help you heal a day and a half faster, according to experts from the University of Nebraska. The key is the vegetable-rich soup, which has tons of antioxidants, and is also hydrating… and the sulfur compounds in the garlic, which act as an anti-inflammatory. And they’re both immune-system boosters.

To get the biggest nutritional boost from watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupe and more, store them at room temperature. That’s because the antioxidant levels in melons continue to rise after they’re picked… But refrigerating them can stop that process cold, and cut the number of antioxidants in the fruit in half.
A USDA study found that watermelons kept at room temperature developed nearly double the levels of beta-carotene as refrigerated melons, which promote healthy skin and eyes. But once a melon’s been cut, keep it chilled to prevent bacterial growth.

If it’s over 6 months old, it isn’t giving you the same nutritional punch. According to the Journal of Food Science, the disease-fighting antioxidants in olive oil are 40% less effective 6 months after the bottle is opened. And that’s true even if you’re storing it properly in a cool, dark place. So only buy small bottles of olive oil. That way they won’t sit around, and you’ll get a full dose of antioxidants.

Allergy sufferers……Put these things on your shopping list: onions, apples, blueberries, red grapes and green tea. According to the journal Clinical & Experimental Allergy, those foods are high in an antioxidant called “quercetin.” And research shows it prevents immune cells from releasing histamine – which is a protein that gives you symptoms like itchy, watery eyes and sneezing.

peanut butter and grapes-wp

Preventing memory loss as we age may be as simple as eating peanut butter and red grapes for lunch, or drinking a glass of red wine with dinner. Resveratrol – an antioxidant compound in red grapes and peanuts – has already been shown to improve heart health… And new research in Scientific Reports shows it improves spatial learning and memory, too. In fact, resveratrol may even be able to boost the brainpower of people with severe neuro-degenerative conditions, like Alzheimer’s disease. So, have a peanut butter sandwich at lunch – and red grapes as a snack.
