Do you have someone in your family you always butt heads with? No matter what’s being discussed – or what the situation is – they find a reason to get mad. Clinical psychiatrist Dr. Mark Goulston says what they have is called “impotent rage.”

It’s anger that results from feeling powerless. They feel like they don’t have control over their life, so they lash out at whoever is around. Or they feel they were dealt a bad hand in life – so they take out their feelings of frustration on others. So how can you deal with them? Listen to them. Really try and understand what they’re saying and rephrase it back to them. Once they feel like they’ve been heard, they’ll calm down. Because it makes them feel they’re being treated fairly.

Because strong emotions make us move more aggressively, according to Harvard University researchers. And when we add the distraction of rehashing the issue at hand, we end up paying less attention to proper form and movement, which raises the risk of overuse and injury.

Did you know that if you’re trying NOT to lose your temper, you should forget about taking a deep breath and counting to 10? The reason? Because it can make you even angrier. Researchers at Ohio State University say that if you focus too much on how you’re feeling, it keeps the anger in the forefront of your mind – which makes you more likely to act aggressively. So, what’s the best way to tame a temper? So-called “self-distancing” – where you mentally remove yourself from the situation by pretending you’re seeing it from the point of view of a fly on the wall. Which has been shown to be more effective at eliminating anger – even immediately after the incident… compared to thinking calming thoughts, or trying to find your “happy place.”

According to research from psychology professor, Brad Bushman at Ohio State University, just 5 minutes on a rowing machine can reduce feelings of aggression caused by criticism. And it works a lot better than taking out your anger on a punching bag. Doing that fuels aggressive feelings, and Bushman’s research found people got angrier! Because aggressive moves make people feel more aggressive. But on a rowing machine, you’re using your entire body – and rowing at a moderate pace of 7 miles per hour relaxes muscles in a way that counteracts the tension caused by anger.

Which is healthier for your heart: To suppress your feelings, or let ‘em rip? It’s a trick question – neither of those options is good for your heart.

If you lay into someone, scream and let your anger out, it raises your risk of a heart attack or stroke for the next 2 hours.

But suppressing anger isn’t a good way to go either. Over time, keeping your feelings bottled up can wear your body down, leading to high blood pressure, depression, and heart disease.

So what should you do when you’re majorly mad? Take a “time out” to manage your anger. Take at least 10 slow, deep breaths to reduce your stress hormones, heart rate, and blood pressure. Psychiatry professor Dr. Charles Raison from the University of Arizona says that’s enough to offset the adrenaline response, so you can share your negative feelings without blowing up at someone or doing your own body any harm.

Being angry can increase your odds of having a heart attack up to 14-fold for up to two hours after an argument. And studies show that people who can’t control their temper are more prone to thickened arteries, which can be an early sign of heart disease and stroke risk. That’s why Duke University researchers say control your temper and you could control your heart.

When you’re driving, and someone makes a bone-headed move, honks, or cuts you off – do you turn into the Hulk and get road rage?

Well, you might want to practice forgiveness and take deep breaths, instead. Researchers at Australia’s University of The Sunshine Coast put study participants into driving simulators that measured heart rate, blood pressure, and anxiety levels – and had them encounter a variety of drivers… from polite and considerate ones, to aggressive and distracted ones.

The result: when participants drove alongside rude, aggressive drivers – who cut them off, tailgated and honked – their blood pressure spiked. They also became more aggressive and distracted, had more near-crashes with other cars and pedestrians.

They were also more likely to miss a turn, and drive off the road.

And research from MIT shows the stress of road rage can last for your entire commute – and beyond. And that kind of chronic stress boosts blood pressure – and raises your risk of heart disease within 6 years. So forgive bad drivers – for your heart’s sake.

Half of people suffering from depression feel more angry and irritable than anything else. In fact, those emotions are indicative of someone who’s severely depressed, according to psychiatrist Dr. Philip Muskin from Columbia University Medical Center. For example, they’ll start an argument at the drop of a hat, like when they walk in the door from work. Or they’ll get ultra-irritated at small things, like a stain on their shirt. If that sounds familiar, to you or a loved one, seek counseling. 80% of people with clinical depression respond to treatment.

If you’ve just had a screaming match with someone – be careful for the next 2 hours. Because your heart attack risk will be over 8 times higher than normal. That’s due to the stress hormones flooding your body – and the rise in blood pressure and heart rate. So the next time you get riled up by a fight – or you get angry at traffic – ask yourself if it’s worth a medical emergency. Then, take slow, deep breaths. That’ll help relax your blood vessels and slow your heart rate, so you can get out of the anger-induced danger zone.
