Do you fight hay fever with antihistamines, and still suffer from itchy eyes, a runny nose, and sneezing? Try a nasal steroid spray, like Flonase, instead. Researchers at the University of Chicago say nasal meds are more effective and faster-acting than pills and shut down allergy symptoms for 80% of people within hours. Plus, they don’t get into your bloodstream, so they don’t cause side effects like some pills can.

If you have allergies – and you get migraines – that’s not a coincidence. People with allergy symptoms are 30% more likely to get migraines. And they tend to be more frequent and severe. Researchers say it’s because the trigeminal nerve is involved in both responses – and it’s the main sensory nerve in the face. It also interprets some stimuli – like a runny nose or itchy eyes – as pain, triggering a headache. The good news is: The meds that relieve allergies can lessen your head pain, too. And people who get allergy shots can cut the frequency and intensity of their migraines in half!

You can blame your allergies on your ceiling fan! The flat blades pick up tons of dust and dirt, especially when they’re not spinning. So, regularly remove the grime with a moist cloth to keep your ceiling fan from scattering dust and dirt all over your bed at night.

It could be what’s in your bedroom.

Like horizontal blinds. They attract more dust than fabric shades.

And anything stored under the bed attracts dust bunnies. So, pull everything out and vacuum under there once a month.

Finally: You may wake up with allergies because your shoes are in your bedroom. Because the stuff tracked in on the soles of your shoes can be a major allergy trigger. So if you can, leave your shoes outside the bedroom door.

It turns out, a new study found only about half of the people who THINK they have a food allergy actually do. And nutrition experts say that’s a big deal… because if you’re avoiding certain foods because of the way they make you feel, you may be missing out on key nutrients you need to stay healthy!

In other words: If you suspect you may have a food allergy, see an allergist for a diagnosis BEFORE you start restricting your diet for no reason.

Before you add a wool blanket to your bed or cozy up under one on the couch, know this: It could be teeming with allergy-causing dust mites. According to microbiologist Dr. David Clarke, wool attracts 42% MORE mites than cotton, because it has a deeper pile and more twists in the fibers… and that allows mites to crawl inside, hunker down and multiply. So before you use the wool blankets, wash them and allow them to dry completely… especially if you can dry them in the sun. The UV rays help destroy the allergens mites leave behind. And then repeat the washing and drying every 2 weeks.

Do you have allergies? They could be the reason you’re gaining weight! If you’re taking an antihistamine to stop itchy, watery eyes and a runny nose, you’re blocking the neurotransmitter histamine AND a receptor that suppresses your appetite. So try eliminating allergy symptoms with a nasal allergy spray. Nasal meds work faster than pills and shut down allergy symptoms for 80% of people within hours. Plus, they don’t enter your bloodstream, so they don’t cause side effects like some pills.

Do you see a ficus plant? That could be the reason. Research from Belgium found that 78% of people with airborne allergies react to ficus! But that doesn’t mean you can’t have any indoor plants around – because they can be good for you. Indoor plants not only help people feel more relaxed, some plants can clear allergens from the air. So try something like a hibiscus – which produces little to no airborne pollen. And for cleaner air, NASA recommends a corn plant – also known as a mass cane. It not only can reduce the amount of dust in a small office by 20%. It clears contaminants like formaldehyde from the air – and chemicals like that can make an allergy sufferer even more sensitive to allergy triggers.

So can candied ginger or a ginger supplement. A study in Nutritional Biochemistry found that a compound in ginger stops the immune system from overreacting to the histamine that triggers allergies. But talk to your doctor. Because the volatile oils in ginger – called gingerols – have anti-inflammatory properties – which can interfere with blood clotting medications.

Press your tongue against the roof of your mouth for 5 seconds. Then press a finger on the spot between your eyebrows for 5 seconds. Now, alternate back and forth a few times. That causes the vomer bone – which runs along your nasal passages – to rock back and forth. And that can relieve congestion in 20 seconds.
