…you may want to leave that tray table in the upright and locked position. That’s because disease-causing germs like MRSA and E. coli can linger on airplane armrests, window shades, tray tables, and toilet handles for days, according to scientists from Auburn University. Plus, contact with those pathogens could lead to antibiotic resistant infections and a gut bug that can cause kidney failure. And that’s not an exaggeration… the MRSA found on a cloth seatback pocket lasted 168 hours — which is a week… and the E. coli on an airplane armrest hung around for 4 days. So wash your hands frequently when you’re flying, and don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth until you do.

First, you won’t typically get jet lag unless you cross two time zones. If you have a trip coming up that does, before leaving, start operating on the time zone to which you’re traveling. Get up and go to sleep at the correct hour for your destination – and plan your meals according to that schedule too.

If you can choose your seat on the flight, try for a window seat. That way, you can adjust the window shade depending on the direction you’re traveling. Get more light if you’re arriving during the day – close the shade to reduce light exposure if you’ll be arriving at night.

Also in a window seat you’ll have an easier time sleeping. It’s easier to prop up a pillow next to the window – and you won’t have to get up every time your seatmates need the restroom.

Lastly, skip the in-flight movie. Watching a movie stimulates you more than it relaxes you. And can keep you from getting much-needed rest.

Even your favorite food won’t taste as good on an airplane.

The issue is that the air pressure at that altitude deadens our taste buds – kind of like having a cold. Also, our perception of salty and sweet drops 30% at high altitudes – so food tastes blander. On top of that, the lack of humidity in the cabin dries out our nose – so we can’t smell our food as well. And without our sense of smell, food tastes duller.

Have you ever had an “airplane headache?”

Neurologists say they’re common and usually flare up as the plane is landing.

That’s because, as the cabin pressure drops as the plane descends, it can create pressure in the sinuses, triggering head pain.

So, how can you arrive at your destination headache-free? Doctors say about an hour before landing, take an anti-inflammatory painkiller, like ibuprofen or naproxen. And use a nasal decongestant spray to open up your sinuses so they depressurize as the plane descends.

I have the secret to a more enjoyable airplane flight.

Well, enjoyable for you, maybe not for the folks sitting near you.

The secret is: Bring along a snack that’s spicy and stinky. Like hot-n-spicy peanuts, Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, or a spicy chicken curry sandwich. A study by the German airline Lufthansa found that because of the dry airplane air, our nasal cavities dry out. That reduces our ability to detect sweet and salty flavors by about 30%. That’s why airline food tastes so bland. But eating something stinky and spicy will please your taste buds, and can thin out mucus, making your nose run and moisten your nasal passage.

As an added bonus, your moist nasal passages will help keep infections from entering your system…Because it makes your nose better at filtering out germs.

The guy in the seat next to you may hate you, but at least you’ll be more comfortable and infection free. Just don’t tell them the trick came from me.

Where should you sit on a plane?

The safest seats are in an exit row. If those are booked, try to sit no further than five rows away. That’s because the closer you are to the exit, the more likely you’ll be able to escape in an emergency, like a fire. That’s according to “The Survivors Club: The Secrets and Science That Could Save Your Life” by Ben Sherwood.

Also, the healthiest seat is an aisle seat. Passengers who sit there are most likely to move and walk around – which is essential for avoiding blood clots.
