Try a finger massage! University of Miami researchers found taking 5 minutes to firmly massage the tips of your fingers can boost energy, alertness, and concentration for up to two hours! That’s because it stimulates acupressure points linked to the frontal lobes of the brain. And that produces energizing beta waves that enhance focus! So during your next 3pm energy slump, try a 5-minute finger massage. That’ll power you through the rest of the workday.

Do you frequently wake up with a charley horse – or cramp – in your calf in the middle of the night? Next time it happens, try relaxing your leg, and pinching the fleshy area between your nose and upper lip with your thumb and index finger for 30 seconds. According to acupressure practitioners, that’s called an “acu-pinch.” And activating that area boosts circulation in your lower extremities, which can get you past the charley horse faster.

Tap your chest!

There’s an acupressure point in the middle of the breastbone – at about where your third rib would be. Gently tap that point for a minute every couple of hours. Eastern medicine experts say it’ll trigger the thymus gland to produce more T-cells, which are the cells that help our immune system find and attack viruses.

If you want to try acupressure on yourself, here are tips from Janet Shaffer, from Duke Integrative Medicine:

For example: To kill nausea, press the inside of your forearm 3-finger widths up from your wrist. That’s the same spot targeted by motion sickness bracelets.

For a headache, pinch the webbed skin between your thumb and index finger.

And for gas or constipation, rub your abdomen in clockwise circles, 150 to 300 times.

Try this acupressure technique to help you wind down at the end of the day:
Massage your eyebrows!
According to University of Miami researchers, rubbing your eyebrows for 2 minutes once you’re tucked into bed helps stimulate the brain to release calming theta waves. And that can help you drift off 54% faster!

If you feel achy when the days get shorter, and the temperatures start to drop, you’ve got a lot of company. The reason? Because our body’s production of mood-boosting and painkilling endorphins drops as we head from Fall into Winter – when our pituitary kind of goes into hibernation.

But studies show acupressure can boost endorphin production. The trick: Firmly massage the outside edge of your ears from the tops, to the lobes, for one minute… And it’ll soothe your aches and pains for at least an hour.

Get a foot rub! University of Miami researchers found a 10-minute foot massage stimulates acupressure points… Which energize the white blood cells that destroy invading viruses on contact. Don’t have someone around to massage your feet? Put a couple cans of food or tennis balls on the floor, and gently roll each foot back and forth.

If you have chronic back pain, ear acupressure can provide relief! So no needles – just ear massage. According to the University of Pittsburgh, patients who got ear acupressure once a week for a month cut their pain almost in half! Because points on the outer ear trigger neural pathways to release fewer inflammatory chemicals. So find a practitioner who can show you how to massage your own ear for pain relief. Go to NCCAOM.org – which stands for the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.

Try this acupressure trick: Arrange your three middle fingers in a triangle, and apply pressure just above the bridge of your nose, also known as your “third eye.” Do that for 30 seconds and repeat as needed. Cynthia Ribeiro, president of the American Massage Therapy Association, says that pressure point breaks up tension in the sinus cavity and relieves sinus headaches.

If you find it hard to fall asleep, try this: Gently massage both earlobes using your thumbs and index fingers for 30 seconds, or until they feel warm. Traditional Chinese medicine says the earlobes are acupressure points that relieve stress and calm the body – which could help you sleep.
