Download this app for emergencies: “911 Help SMS.” The app makes it easier for an ambulance to find you, like if you’re in a car accident or anywhere unfamiliar. It’ll pinpoint your altitude and longitude and send that location to 9-1-1, and to any family or friends you put in an emergency contact list. And it’s FREE.

In a medical emergency:

If you’re having a medical emergency, make it easier for the paramedics to help you…By making sure they can find you! For example, if you get stung by a bee in your backyard, and you’re having trouble breathing – get someone to call 911. Then go out into your driveway. Medical experts say that if you’re having a life-threatening issue, every second counts. And you don’t want the paramedics wasting time wondering if they’ve got the right house, pounding on your front door, or trying to figure out how to get through the gate into your backyard.

What’s the biggest mistake people make when there’s a medical emergency?

Would you believe it’s NOT calling 9-1-1? That’s the word from healthcare expert Leslie Michelson. He wrote “The Patient’s Playbook” – and he says most people make the mistake because they aren’t sure if what they’re experiencing is a true emergency, or serious enough to call for paramedics. But Michelson says it’s best to err on the side of caution. And if the patient has a history of medical issues – like heart disease or diabetes, has a head injury, or is elderly – definitely call 9-1-1.

Never Forget.

I know many of you already know this, but I feel it’s important and everyone should share this information. I’ve known too many young people who have had heart attacks. It’s not just something that happens to older or overweight people. It can happen to anybody!

But would you recognize the signs if you were having a heart attack? 70% of people DON’T know the five warning signs of a heart attack. So here they are:

•Pain or discomfort in the jaw, neck and back

•Feeling weak or lightheaded

•Chest pain

•Arm or shoulder pain

•Shortness of breath

The longer a person waits to get treatment for a heart attack, the more damage to the heart muscle.

So know those warning signs and dial 911.
